SEARCH FOR SAILOR TURNS TO RECOVERY OPERATION
The search for a yachtsman, missing off the coast of Port Stephens, has become a recovery operation.
It’s believed experienced sailor, 62-year-old Mal Lennon, was at the helm of the 36-foot boat Amante, when he was struck by a huge wave and swept overboard late yesterday morning.
Police say two helicopters and Marine Rescue personnel have scoured the area until the early hours of this morning without success.
“Unfortunately, due to the sea conditions, we believe that this will be a recovery mission,” said Marine Area Command Superintendent, Mark Hutching.
Mr Lennon was on one of a number of yachts returning from competing in the Pittwater to Coffs Harbour yacht race.
It’s believed he wasn’t wearing a life jacket.
The mayday call came from the remaining four members of the Amante.
The search for Mr Lennon is expected to wrap up late this afternoon.
