WORLD CANCER DAY PROMPTS CALL FOR MORE SPECIALISTS

Today is World Cancer Day and the North West branch of the Cancer Council is using the event to call for better access to palliative care in regional areas.
The organisation says the service plays an important role in the lives of people undergoing cancer treatment.
“We have a palliative care, one palliative care doctor but the ratio between the number of patients and the professionals we have is just not high enough.”
While the state government has acknowledged gaps in the industry, the Cancer Council wants to see action.
“It’s a really specialised field and people need to have some extra training, whether it be doctors and nurses, so it’s doctors and it’s nurses and we know our health system you know has a lot of gaps, but this is so important.”
