CLOSING THE GAP PROMPTS CALL FROM LOCAL LEADERS

Local Indigenous leaders say more needs to be done to address the high levels of Aboriginal unemployment along the Mid North Coast.

Taree Indigenous Development and Employment CEO John Clark is leading the call for a new indigenous-run program to be introduced to combat the issue.

“It’s gotta be from the ground up kind of approach it can’t come from the top which means it’s gotta be Aboriginal people looking at how to make things happen, how to do things,” Mr Clark said.

The comments follow the latest Closing the Gap report card which highlighted limited improvements in the areas of health, education and employment.
