CYCLISTS SLAPPED WITH NEW FINES

Cyclists in New South Wales will now be stung with bigger fines for offences, with new laws coming into effect today.
The changes mean penalties for riders will increase substantially from a base rate of $71 to $319 for not wearing a helmet, $425 for running a red light and $106 for riding at night without lights.
Riders must also carry photo ID under the state government’s Go Together campaign, but cyclists will have 12 months to get used to that new rule before being fined $106 if found without ID.
But the changes also affect motorists, they’ll be fined $319 and lose two demerit points if they don’t give bike riders one metre of space when overtaking at 60km/h or less.
