TWO CHARGED AFTER INGLEBURN SHOOTING

A 52-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman have been charged following a deadly siege in Sydney’s south west yesterday.

The man, Peter Williams, understood to be the father of the gunman Wayne Williams, was charged with discharge firearm in a public place and conceal serious indictable offence.

He was refused bail and will appear at Campbelltown Local Court today.

The woman was charged with conceal serious indictable offence and was granted strict conditional bail.

She is due to appear at Campbelltown Local Court on April 4.

Emergency services were called to an industrial estate on Heald Road in Ingleburn at about 10.45am yesterday following reports of a shooting.

The body of 43-year-old Mick Bassal was found at the scene and two other men – believed to be his brothers – were taken to Liverpool Hospital with gunshot wounds.

Wayne Williams, the 33-year-old gunman, then holed himself inside the Inline National Signage building for more than six hours as heavily armed officers and police negotiators locked down the area.

Three people who were trapped inside the building were taken to safety by police just after 5pm, around the same time Williams is believed to have taken his own life.

One of the men injured was reportedly shot in the leg and the other in the shoulder.

One of the men has undergone emergency surgery, while the other has superficial wounds to his lower body.

NSW Police earlier said they had been negotiating with the suspected gunman.

“At this stage, there’s an ongoing investigation,” Detective Inspector Mark Brett told reporters.

“The operation is continuing. It’s at a delicate stage.”

Streets were shut down around the second generation, family-owned business and heavy traffic was diverted away from the industrial area.

Three ambulances were parked at the front gates of the business while a large police truck blocked the view of a small crowd of staff from local businesses.

Witnesses from other nearby businesses say they heard five gunshots ring out in the morning.

There are reports the incident is domestic related.

Businesses were placed into lockdown and a one kilometre exclusion zone was established, forcing the media and public away from the scene.
