FEARS OVER BASE FUTURE FIZZLED OUT

Concerns the region would lose its aviation firefighters have been extinguished.

The United Firefighters Union raised the alarm overnight, saying the brand new Coffs Harbour aviation firefighter station next to the airport may have to close its doors.

John Miller from the union says “that’s over 350,000 passengers per year, that wouldn’t have the same safety as those people flying over capital cities.”

However the Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Darren Chester this afternoon said that there were no plans to disband any airport rescue and fire-fighting services.

The Union had been under the impression the Minister’s department was proposing to change airport requirements, which would have seen the Coffs Harbour station closed, along with several others across the country.
