SOUTHS DIG IN FOR THE WIN OVER WESTS

In the Newcastle Rugby League competition, Cessnock beat Central 30 points to eight today, while Souths produced a stirring comeback at home to down Wests.

The Lions looked like opening the scoring as Jake Lawrence set up Sam Cook.

Wests had a decent chance of their own when Matt Herman scooped up the loose ball, but Jarrod Flanagan produced an impressive try-saving tackle.

The Rosellas did eventually post first points through Joel Brown and Simon Williams.

But Souths hit back as Willie Heta and Flanagan combined out wide.

Heta’s conversion from the sideline made it 6-4.

Williams did plenty of work to help the visitors regain the lead.

Wests scored a spectacular try to end the half, but it wasn’t enough to steal the points.
