  • Former NSW Minister Eddie Obeid has been sentenced to a minimum of three years in jail for misconduct in public office. In June, a jury found the former Labor politician guilty of lobbying a senior public servant about lucrative Circular Quay leases without revealing his family’s stake in the outlets.
  • A man has been charged over a crash in the Newcastle suburb of Wickham yesterday, which claimed the life of a 36-year-old woman. Jennifer Bates was waiting to give way at a roundabout on Hannell Street on her scooter, when she was struck by an out of control ute.
  • A world first trial to treat epilepsy is underway in Melbourne whereby medication is delivered directly to the brain. A team at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital is confident the new technique will help sufferers like 27-year-old Natalie Kellalea who suffers severe seizures avoid the damaging side effects of other medications.
  • The nervous wait is over for year 12 students in NSW, with HSC results out today. About 77,000 students across the state received their scores via text message and email at six this morning.
  • And one of the world’s biggest cruise ships, Ovation of the Seas has sailed into Sydney Harbour sporting on board skydiving, surfing and a bionic bar.
