12PM NEWS UPDATE: DECEMBER 16, 2016

Hi there, Paul Lobb with an NBN News update.

  • A former nurse who murdered two elderly patients at a Ballina nursing home has been sentenced to at least 27 years in jail. Megan Haines killed 82-year old Marie Darragh and 77-year-old Isabella Spencer by injecting the pair with insulin in May 2014. In the NSW Supreme Court today, Justice Peter Garling described the murders as “particularly serious”, noting the vulnerability of the victims and the registered nurse’s significant breach of trust.
  • There’s been a lucky escape for residents of a house in Carlton, in Melbourne’s north, after a balcony collapsed off the front of the property, taking down powerlines. Amazingly, no one was injured.
  • A Sydney mother whose little boy was hit by a taxi is pleading for drivers to take care, in the lead-up to Christmas. Police have released distressing CCTV of the moment young Jake was struck, as he was making his way home from school.
  • Hundreds of people have been forced to flee their homes as fire ripped through a former cotton mill in Manchester, in England’s north-west.
  • And the first pictures of Prince Harry with his new girlfriend Meghan Markle have emerged. The couple was spotted taking a walk through London, on the way to a West End show.
