SCRAP SHARK NETS, INQUIRY RECOMMENDS

A senate inquiry into shark mitigation and deterrence has recommended shark nets be phased out in favour of non-lethal measures.
The recommendation comes less than three weeks after nets were rolled out across five North Coast beaches as part of the state government’s second shark net trial.
The report is the culmination of 10 public hearings from across the country, with evidence from shark attack victims, ecologists, first-responders, surfers and local communities.
It’s also recommended lethal drum lines be immediately replaced with SMART drumlines.
