A popular shared pathway next to Newcastle Harbour will be temporarily diverted, while the state government upgrades a seawall at Honeysuckle.
Work on the Lee 4 Seawall will begin next week, with more than 6,000 tonnes of rock to be added to the harbour edge to bolster the promenade.
A popular playground will also be temporarily moved during construction.
The project is expected to take about 14 weeks.
