BUSHFIRE EMERGENCY NEAR BEACHWOOD

Pappinbarra Road west of Wauchope remains blocked off tonight, as residents of surrounding properties face an anxious wait.

“We’ve had bushfires around us but never right near the house and we’re right on the road, so it’s pretty devastating,” resident Julie Hadfield said.

At least three firefighters in all were treated for smoke inhalation, as crews battled extreme heat and winds.

Locals say the conditions are like nothing they’ve ever seen.

“I’ve been here 25 years, but yeah not for a long time, but very tricky, we’re just hoping the wind drops and they can contain it,” another resident said.
