Central Hunter police have established a crime scene following the discovery of bones in bushland, west of Newcastle.
Police were alerted to an area off an isolated bush track at Stockrington on Saturday.
Forensic specialists joined detectives in an intensive search today, in an effort to determine the age and origin of the bones.
Police say the operation is linked to an ongoing investigation.
