DRIVER ALLEGEDLY MORE THAN FOUR TIMES THE LEGAL LIMIT
A man behind the wheel of a car that crashed into a median strip in Port Stephens was allegedly so intoxicated he had to be assisted from the car and couldn’t stand.
Just before midnight on Thursday, police responded to reports that an out of control car had driven onto a medium strip on Gowrie Ave in Nelson Bay.
Police allegedly found a 38-year-old man behind the wheel with the engine running and helped him from the vehicle.
The man allegedly returned a positive breath test of 0.216, and his licence was suspended.
He was issued a court attendance notice for May 8.
Police conducted more than 5,000 breath tests on day one of Operation Tortoise across the northern region, which runs from the Central Coast to the Queensland border.
280 people were caught speeding, with a further 17 seatbelt offences also being recorded.
