19-YEAR-OLD FACING LIFETIME BAN FOR ALLEGED REFEREE ASSAULT

A teenager is facing a lifetime ban from rugby union after being arrested for allegedly assaulting a referee at a match in Newcastle.

Police say an 18-year-old man punched a 19-year-old referee in the jaw at an under 19’s rugby union grand final at No. 2 Sportsground in Newcastle West, shortly before 6pm yesterday.

The 19-year-old referee suffered minor injuries.

Police subsequently attended a home at Rutherford at around 10pm, where they arrested the 18-year-old man.
