BURWOOD COAL LINE REMAINS EXPOSED ON HUNTER STREET

A piece of Hunter’s history has been uncovered, during the construction of Newcastle’s light rail.
The old Burwood coal line has been exposed at the corner of Darby and Hunter Streets.
It was built in the early 1850s to transport coal to Newcastle Harbour.
Transport New South Wales says the remains were first uncovered during site investigations earlier this year.
They will be removed once archaeologically surveyed and recorded.
