CONTRACTORS FINED OVER DEATH OF BRICKLAYER

The head contractor and sub-contractor of a Wyong construction site have been fined a total of $174,000 in the NSW Industrial Court for the death of a bricklayer four years ago.
In March 2007, 50-year-old Robert Watson suffered fatal crush injuries after an unbraced brick wall collapsed on top of him.
Mr Watson was employed by Gallim Constructions who were contracted by Mainbrace Constructions to undertake brick and block laying works at Kooindah Waters Resort .
Mainbrace was fined $165,000 after pleading guilty to failing to ensure the health and safety of a worker at its worksite, while Gallim’s director was fined $9000.
