NEW TECHNOLOGY TO REDUCE HAIR LOSS DURING CHEMOTHERAPY

Patients at Armidale Hospital’s oncology unit now have access to a new treatment that reduces hair loss during chemotherapy.
Eight silicon cooling caps – worth almost $50,000 – have been fitted into the unit allowing around 20 patients to be treated each week.
The caps reduce the temperature of the scalp by a few degrees immediately before, during and after chemotherapy.
The technology slows the blood flow to the hair follicle, which reduces the risk of hair loss.
