POLICE PRAISE CROWD BEHAVIOUR OF SUPERCAR FANS
Police have praised the good behaviour of racegoers at the inaugural Newcastle 500, with only five people arrested out of an estimated 190,000 spectators.
Operation Boote commenced last Friday to ensure the safety and security of competitors and officials over the three-day event.
The five arrests include:
– A 33-year-old man who allegedly assaulted a security guard on Shortland Esplanade about 4pm yesterday. He was charged with two counts of assault and resisting police.
– A man and a woman – both aged 35 – were arrested after an alleged fight on the footpath at King Street, near Crown Street, about 10.40pm on Saturday. They were charged with affray.
– A 30-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted a 44-year-old woman at Foreshore Park about 10pm on Saturday.
– A 29-year-old male motorcyclist was arrested and charged after he was allegedly detected travelling at 157km/h in a 90km/h zone on Main Road in Shortland, about 11.30am on Saturday.
More than 5580 random breath tests were also conducted. 13 drivers were charged with drink-driving while 489 Traffic Infringement Notices were issued.
