NEW ENGLAND FIRE ENGINES GO DIGITAL

Firefighters’ tasks, in critical situations, have just become a whole lot easier, following the rollout of crew trucks going digital.
22 new data terminals have just been installed in New England stations – giving them easier access to maps, weather information, a stronger GPS signal and chemical information.
Previously, firefighters has to access the information through hard copy manuals.
“We do have a bit of a challenge when we get out there, out into remote areas, with the radios picking up radio signals and all that sort of stuff… But, these mobile data terminals are hooked up to a satellite so we’ve got things like navigation and back to base communications via satellite. So it’s a very reliable system.”
The rollout follows last year’s implementation of 182 vehicles across the state.
