MAYOR SAYS ‘WE’RE NOT GAGGING COUNCILLORS’ WITH DRAFT MEDIA POLICY

Armidale Regional Council has hit back at claims its draft media policy is a gag order on councillors.
Under the proposed plan, only a nominated council representative would be able to talk to the media on official council matters.
“Really its either the mayor that is the spokesperson or the CEO. Or the mayor if not available can delegate it to the deputy mayor”
Mayor Simon Murray says the draft policy is not preventing those elected to council from having a say.
“We’re not gagging councillors. If they wish to talk on an issue, they just can’t speak on behalf of council. They can speak on behalf of themselves.”
The draft policy is out for public comment until January 22.
