COOKS HILL FIGS FALL

Work is underway this morning to cut down historic fig trees in Council street between Darby and Bruce streets.

Newcastle Council CEO Jeremy Bath says Council’s  hands are tied and must remove the figs in order to ” to deliver the rehabilitation of ageing water, drainage, utility, road and footpath infrastructure,”

The removal operation will take place over the next three days.

Part of council’s renewal plan includes planting 17 new street trees, replacing and upsizing drainage, footpaths, roadway, kerbs and gutters, and improving road safety.

It’s just the latest figs on Newcastle Counciul’s chopping block – in 2012  the Laman Street figs fell following a two year battle, and last year’s Swan street and figs in Young Street, Carrington.
