NEW FUNDING TO STOP INVASIVE WEED ON PEEL RIVER
Work will be undertaken along the banks of the Peel River in the coming weeks to rid the waterway of an invasive weed species.
The Madeira Vine is an aggressive weed, which can grow up to one-metre per day in the right conditions.
“The Madeira Vine gets into trees and ultimately destroys those trees and they fall over, blocking the river, but also upsetting the natural habitat over of the river and the flows and fish stocks get depleted.”
Tamworth council has already been conducting chemical and biological trials to see which method of eradication works best.
This morning, more than $12, 000 was announced from the state government to assist the council in a control program.
“It will be mainly for the Dungowan Creek area around Dungowan Station and in those sorts of areas. And council has been working with land holders in the area.”
It’s hoped by controlling the weed more anglers will use the waterway.
