AMMONIA LEAK AT HUNTER FACTORY

An investigation is underway, after nine people were taken to hospital, following an ammonia leak at a Hunter factory overnight.
Just before 7.30pm, emergency services were called to the Steggles plant at Beresfield, following reports of an accident.
Around 350 employees were evacuated, with 11 treated by paramedics on scene after exposure to a chemical spill.
Nine of those were taken to nearby hospitals – all have since been released.
In a statement, parent company Bartter Enterprises confirmed: “The ammonia leak occurred during installation work by a specialist provider of new refrigeration equipment outside the factory, with some ammonia making its way into the factory.”
The company also confirmed that levels have returned to normal, and operations have resumed.
SafeWork NSW and the EPA are now investigating.
