HUMAN REMAINS FOUND NEAR FREEWAY

Human remains found strewn across a major motorway north of Sydney had been run over several times by passing motorists, police say.

The discovery of the body parts was reported to police by one of those motorists, who accidentally ran over a part, at about 11.45pm on Tuesday near the Gosford exit at Somersby, on the Central Coast.

“It appears, at this stage of the investigation, the body has been run over numerous times,” Detective Sergeant Darren Deamer from Gosford police told reporters.

On Wednesday morning, northbound lanes between Mooney Mooney bridge and the Kariong exit were closed while police combed the area for clues as to how the body parts, which were scattered over 400 metres, came to be on the highway.

It is not yet known if the remains are those of a male or a female.

Det Sgt Deamer could not say how many body parts had been found or if they were clothed. He was also unable to say if the parts were decomposed in any way.

“The search is still continuing,” he said.

Police are uncertain whether the incident was suicide or a hit and run and are not ruling out the possibility that the victim died somewhere else.

Police will look at missing person reports in their attempt to identify the victim.

The closed F3 lanes reopened about 12.30pm (AEDT).

Anyone with information is urged to contact Gosford Detectives via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
