Merewether’s Jackson Baker has scraped into the second round at the season-ending 10,000 point qualifying series event in Hawaii.
He struggled early on in the huge, unpredictable swell, before scoring a three point five.
With less than two minutes to go, the Australian was last in the heat.
A four point three helped him advance to round two by less than a point.
Fellow Newcastle surfer Ryan Callinan will start his campaign in round three.
