RECORD PASSENGER NUMBERS FOR JULY

Newcastle Airport has seen a record number of passengers pass through its gates for the month of July.

More than 104,000 people used the airport, an increase of two per cent on the same month last year.

Newcastle Airport Manager, David Nye, says the rise can be attributed to school holiday travel and FlyPelican’s first full month of operating a Newcastle to Canberra route.

“It was great to see the passengers filling up flights to Canberra as the airline servicing this route, FlyPelican, was only launched in the month prior,” he said.

Other airlines also increased services to cater for major events including the State of Origin in Brisbane and International Champion’s Cup football match in Melbourne.

“Both Virgin Australia and Jetstar added flights to their schedule before and after these events, and the travellers in our region responded very positively.”
