HEALTH PROFESSIONALS SEND WARNING OF LARGE-SCALE BAT DEATHS

Health professionals are warning residents in the Hunter and New England regions to be cautious of large-scale bat deaths.

The mass deaths are likely due to consistent heat waves and a lack of available food.

Bats and flying foxes can spread ‘lyssavirus’, a rare but deadly disease, if they wound a human through biting or scratching.

Residents should contact their local wildlife group if they spot an ill or injured animal.
