Police have voiced serious concern after finding a number of people driving without ensuring their children are properly restrained.
Several motorists were stopped for allegedly poor driving behaviour yesterday, all were found to have children in their cars.
Officers stopped a 39-year-old male driver in Moree, just after 4pm, who allegedly had four children unrestrained in the vehicle. He was hit with more than $1,300 in fines and 39 demerit points.
A 30-year-old Kempsey woman also received 20 demerit points just before midday, after police allegedly found three children under the age of 5 in her Ford Territory SUV unrestrained. The woman was also not displaying P-plates.
Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy, says this kind of driving can be life threatening.
“While, thankfully, these drivers were stopped before anyone was injured, their actions could have resulted in very serious consequences very quickly. People need to realise that your choices as a driver do not just affect yourself but everyone else on the road.”
Operation Safe Arrival will run until midnight on Wednesday 1 January 2020.
