NORTHERN RIVERS BOWLS FACING MASS PLAYER EXODUS
A lawn bowls club in the Northern Rivers is facing a possible player exodus, if its doors remain shut for an extended period.
Staff at the Cherry Street Sports Club in Ballina are worried many of the elderly players will not return when restrictions are lifted.
“We’ve roughly got 13,000 members, at this stage we’re communicating with them on a weekly basis, trying to keep them engaged with our club.”
The club, which has been running for 110 years has applied for the federal government’s job keeper allowance.
In the meantime, it will operate with a skeleton staff, to keep the greens green.
“Our job is to ensure that is community club is still here and that’s been my promise to my staff and I stand by that, we’ll do whatever we can to make sure this club survives.”
