RETIREE ESCAPES FIRE AFTER SMOKE ALARM TAKEN DOWN
A Central Coast man has suffered burns, after his home was destroyed by fire early this morning.
Firefighters were called to a retirement village at Halekulani just before 3 o’clock.
The flames so hot, they damaged several other cabins at Bevington Shores.
A 73-year-old resident was taken to Wyong Hospital with minor burns, and smoke inhalation.
Fire fighters say it could easily have been a different story – as the smoke alarm was taken down during home renovations yesterday.
“We believe he awoke hearing noise at the front and as he exited his room, he saw the fire at the front of the residence and he made an exit from the building,” Budgewoi Fire and Rescue Captain John De-Zordo said.
An angle grinder is believed to have started the blaze.
