LEARNER DRIVER CHARGED AFTER 1.5 HOUR POLICE PURSUIT
A man is facing court today after a one-and-a-half hour long police pursuit in the Tweed Byron area.
Around 9:05pm on Friday police saw a commodore with suspected stolen number plates, driving on the Pacific Highway at Yelgun.
When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver allegedly sped up and a pursuit began.
Queensland Pol Air and police pursued the car 40 kilometres north to Fingal.
Tyre spikes were deployed, and successfully damaged two of the car’s tyres, but the commodore continued, weaving in and out of lanes, crossing onto the wrong side of the M1.
The pursuit was terminated, but was restarted a short time later, when police followed the car down a dead-end street.
The 25-year-old driver and passenger were arrested, taken to Tweed Heads Police Station.
The car was unregistered and the learner driver was allegedly under the influence of drugs.
He’s been charged with 13 offences, including not stopping during a police pursuit, driving dangerously, and exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h.
The driver has been refused bail to face Lismore Local Court today.
While, the passenger was issued a number of traffic infringements and released.
Inquiries are continuing.
