Flights between Newcastle and Melbourne will be suspended from next week, in the wake of the New South Wales/Victoria border closure.
On Friday, Newcastle Airport CEO, Dr Peter Cock, said flights between Newcastle and Melbourne would be temporarily suspended from July 16.
The border was closed on Wednesday, after an incredible spike in coronavirus infections led led to greater metropolitan Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire being locked down for at least six weeks.
In a press conference today, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced there are now 1249 active cases in the state.
216 new cases have been confirmed in the last 24 hours.
Overall, there are 49 people in hospital, 15 of those in intensive care.
Sadly, a man aged in his 90s succumbed to the virus.
Although flights to Melbourne will soon be suspended, the airport has experienced an increase in foot traffic.
The re-opening of the NSW and Queensland border yesterday saw the Williamtown travel hub have it’s busiest day in three months.
Jetstar and Qantas restarted routes between Newcastle and Queensland on Friday.
Virgin is expected to resume flights between the Hunter and Brisbane today.
