A bid has been submitted for Cessnock to host the Asian Football Confederation women’s qualifiers in April next year.
Football Federation Australia today announced a partnership with Cessnock City Council, to host a round one qualification group for the AFC Under-17s Women’s Championship, 2022.
If successful, Cessnock would welcome the Junior Matildas, along with three or four other Asian nations at Baddeley Park .
Turner Park in East Cessnock and Rockwell Automation Park in Weston have also been proposed as training sites for the youth qualifiers.
Cessnock City Council Mayor, Cr Bob Pynsent says the bid is very exciting for the region.
“Our previous experience in hosting international sporting teams has been extremely positive. It’s a chance to show off the region and all
we have to offer. It also means our community get to spectate some quality sport..”
Northern NSW Football Chief Executive Officer, David Eland hopes the opportunity will inspire more girls to get involved.
“the association is appreciative of Cessnock City Council’s support to bid for this important qualification tournament, which would feature the Junior Matildas and showcase some of the best young female footballers in Asia.”
