FIRE DESTROYS BORDER TOWN SHOPS
Fire has completely destroyed the only shops in Mungindi.
Firefighters from New South Wales and Queensland were called to St George Street shortly before 8 o’clock on Tuesday night, to find the buildings well alight.
The fire was contained by 9:30 and was under control by 10:40.
It’s believed the blaze started inside a butcher shop.
Three stores, including the butcher, supermarket, and clothing store, and a residential flat within the building, were completely destroyed by the fire.
Nobody was injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation, with a crime scene established by NSW Police.
Residents will now be forced to leave their border bubble to get supplies.
The fire is estimated to have caused $1-million worth of damage, including stock loss.
The town was already struggling through drought and COVID-19 border issues.
Detectives are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact police.
A Go Fund Me page has been set up to raise money for the community to rebuild.
