“STRAIGHT AWAY I KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG” | HOW A HORROR SURFING ACCIDENT CHANGED THE LIFE OF NOVACASTRIAN JESS COLLINS
Two years ago, 26-year-old Jess Collins was surfing on the Gold Coast when she came off her board and suffered a serious spinal cord injury.
“I came off the back off a wave and instantly felt nothing pretty much from the head down. I was face down in the water and was flipped over, thankfully, by one of my girlfriends and straight away I knew something was wrong.”
After six months of intensive rehabilitation, the Newcastle local became a client of Hunter Spinal Cord Injury Service, who work with people who have suffered a traumatic spinal injury.
Today is World Spinal Cord Injury Day, and for the remainder of Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week Hunter New England Health will be sharing the stories of some of the incredible people who they work with at the service.
