STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT CULTURAL BURNS AT LAKE MACQUARIE

Lake Macquarie school students were invited to witness a cultural burn today, on land behind the old Morriset Hospital.
The Biraban Public pupils were immersed in the indigenous practice, as part of an effort to keep it alive.
“To support the reinvigoration of cultural knowledge within the landscape.” – Jessica Wegener, Firesticks Alliance.
“The kids are the future, so if we don’t teach our kids, they’re not going to be able to continue to maintain culture and knowledge and skills.” – Ashley Williams, Biraban Aboriginal Land Council.
The traditional burns are designed to rejuvenate bushland.
