DRIVER TAKEN TO HOSPITAL AFTER CRASHING INTO UNIT COMPLEX

A unit complex at Shoal Bay has severe structural damage after a man crashed his car into it on Saturday afternoon.

Police received reports a Toyota Hilux collided with the exterior wall of a unit complex on Shoal Bay Road.

The driver then allegedly reversed into a load-bearing wall of the same unit complex, causing part of the wall to collapse.

Residents of the unit complex self-evacuated without injury.

Officers found a 19-year-old man in the driver’s seat of the vehicle.

The man was breath tested and allegedly returned a positive reading.

He was arrested and taken to Nelson Bay Police Station.

The man suffered a medical episode and was taken to Tomaree Hospital.

Fire and Rescue NSW assessed the damage to the unit complex and determined that a structural engineer will need to conduct a further examination.
