CHILDCARE CONCERNS FOR COAST FAMILIES

Opposition leader, Anthony Albanese visited an Ourimbah preschool today, spruiking Labor’s plan to subsidise 90 per cent of the cost of childcare.

The party’s think-tank claims Australian families fork out 37 per cent of overall childcare costs, more than double the OECD average.

Concerns remain about how that could impact women’s participation in the workforce.

“Underemployment of women in some parts of our community has increased to 34 per cent, before COVID, the Central Coast had some of the highest rates,” Dobell MP, Emma McBride said.

The party is also calling for more transparency on how fees are spent, with childcare costs set to rise by 5.3 per cent per year.

“Inflation is negligible, we know that wages aren’t going up,” Mr Albanese said.

“So a 5.3 per cent hit to living standards, will just further exacerbate the problem.”
