SHARK SPOTTING CAUSES BEACHES TO CLOSE

Swimmers were forced to evacuate Newcastle beaches at 9am this morning after a shark alarm was sounded.

Merewhether, Dixon and Bar Beach were shut for a number of hours after the two-metre shark was spotted off the coast.

At 10:30am Bar and Dixon Beach were reopened after Surf Life Savers could no longer spot the animal.

Merewether remained closed due to rough surf conditions.

A shark was sighted again at around 1pm this afternoon, forcing the closure of beaches between Bar and Merewether for the rest of the day.

It was reported to be 3-metres long.

Full report to follow tonight at 6pm.
