NEW ANIMAL CRUELTY PENALTIES INTRODUCED TO STATE PARLIAMENT

Heftier jail sentences could be served for acts of animal cruelty.

The state government has introduced legislation to parliament to overhaul punishments.

Among them, prison time for assaulting an animal could soon double to 12 months’ jail.

Fines for failing to provide food or shelter would jump from a $5,500 fine to more than $16,000, under the proposed law.
