TAMWORTH COUNCIL TO INVESTIGATE CONTAMINATION AT OLD GASWORKS

Drilling will begin at Tamworth’s former gasworks tomorrow, to figure out the scale of contamination.

Council believes tars, oils and ash from previous owners has polluted the surrounding soil for more than 100 years.

“We’ve been asked to find out what is there and what risk that poses to neighbouring properties and report back to the EPA.”

The investigation will help plan for the site’s remediation, which is currently estimated to cost half a million dollars.
