MEN CHARGED AFTER SHOTS FIRED IN POLICE PURSUIT

Two men will face court today after shots were fired at police during a pursuit in the state’s north.

Police were patrolling the Tamworth area just before 3am yesterday, when a Ford Territory was seen leaving a fast food restaurant on Marius Street.

The Ford was seen travelling on the New England Highway, and officers tried to stop the vehicle.

The driver failed to stop, and a pursuit started through the suburbs of Calala, Nemingha, Kootingal, and Tamworth.

During the pursuit, the passenger was seen leaning out the window, and allegedly pointed a firearm at police.

Road spikes were used, and the Ford crashed through the fence of a golf course on Duri Road at 3.30am.

The occupants ran off, but police found the two men, aged 28 and 22, and taken into custody.

During a search of the car, police found a shortened firearm next to the front passenger seat.

The older man was also found in possession of ammunition.

Examination of an unmarked police vehicle in the pursuit found bullet marks in the bonnet and front bumper.

The men were taken to Tamworth Police Station, and charged with a string of offences.

They were refused bail today and will front Tamworth Local Court again tomorrow.
