NATIONALS RETAIN CLARENCE

The O’Farrell Government has passed its first test in the polls, with the Nationals retaining their seat in the Clarence by-election.
The former Mayor of Maclean, Chris Gulaptis recorded a primary vote of more than 56 per cent – the second highest in the seat in 20 years.
But Labor candidate Peter Ellem benefited from a swing of about 18 per cent, with a primary vote of just over 28 per cent.
Mr Gulaptis replaces Steve Cansdell who quit the Nationals, after admitting to signing a false statutory declaration over a speeding fine.
