CALLS FOR STATE-WIDE LATE NIGHT TRADING RESTRICTIONS

There are renewed calls for reduced late-night trading hours in the state’s pubs and clubs, following the success of such restrictions in Newcastle.
New research by Deakin University found reduced hours have the single-greatest impact on curbing alcohol-related assaults.
Newcastle’s lockout model was also said to be one of the most cost-effective.
“For every one hour reduction we’re seeing a 20 per cent reduction in assaults.”
The research was released today, as part of the Australasian Drug and Alcohol Strategy conference in Brisbane.
