A police dog and handler will commence duties in Tamworth on Monday.
It follows years of campaigning, with petitions submitted to the state government and two trials taking place – all highlighting the need for a dog unit in the region.
In January, an officer was selected for the job and since then has been undergoing canine training in Sydney.
The unit will service the Oxley, New England and Barwon Local Area Commands.
