Moree man charged following pursuit in alleged stolen car

A man will face court today charged following a pursuit in an allegedly stolen vehicle in the state’s north today.

Just after 12am (Wednesday 3 May 2023), officers attached to New England Police District stopped a Subaru Forester on Gwydir Street, Moree, for a random breath test.

The car stopped and a man produced his license for checks, before he drove off from the location.

Officers activated their lights in an attempt to stop the vehicle. When the vehicle failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated; however, terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.

Subsequent checks revealed the vehicle was stolen earlier that evening from an address in Moree.

About 4.45am, officers were patrolling when they sighted the man walking on Amaroo Drive. He ran from the location and officers commenced a foot pursuit, arresting him a short time later.

The vehicle was later located at Auburn Street and returned to the owner.

A 40-year-old man was taken to Moree Police Station where he was charged with drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly and hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty.

The Moree man was refused bail to appear at Armidale Local Court today (Wednesday 3 May 2023).
