COUNCIL CRACKDOWN ON FOOTPATH ITEMS

Some businesses in Wingham’s CBD are reporting a 25 per cent decrease in trade, following a council crackdown on furniture on the footpath.

15 businesses have been ordered to removed the items, until the necessary approvals are in place.

In the interim, council has given them a temporary licence for six weeks.

Cafe owner Donna Carrier says she’s concerned about some regulations in the DA, and is working to have them changed.

“We’re being asked to put our furniture a metre off the curb and I don’t feel that that’s safe…I understand that it’s the regulation and it’s something that council may look at changing for us and that’s what we’re hoping will happen, we’re asking for a motion to be moved.”
