BYRON CCTV FUNDING AVAILABLE BUT COUNCIL HAS TO ACT FIRST

Local Government Minister Don Page says the State Government could help fund CCTV cameras in Byron Bay, but says it’s up to council to make the first move.
It comes after the New South Wales Police labelled Johnson Street one of the most violent in Australia.
Records for February place Byron Bay as the fourth-worst area in New South Wales for alcohol-related violence.
Mr Page says governments can provide financial assistance for cameras, but council needs to act first.
“Before you can approach the state and federal government you have to show you have local support in the form of a council resolution.”
Byron Council has previously indicated CCTV cameras are the responsibility of the licensed tourism industry.
