Rewind Series 3 Episode 2 – Last Train To Belmont

April nineteen seventy one, NBN News rode the rails
during the last days of the Belmont to Newcastle Railway service, financial issues, the reason for the closure.

At the time, this CPH Railmotor was used…
the lightweight vehicle class, mostly timber construction,
was designed for country branch lines.

The Belmont Service traveled on tracks originally laid to transport Coal from local mines…
winding through the hill via stations along the way
including Jewells, Dudley Junction and Kahibah…
then through the Fernleigh tunnel and on to the city.

Locals were interviewed, on the termination of the service..

A few days later NBN returned to Newcastle Train Station to farewell Railmotor number 17, on it’s last journey to Belmont.
